In 1991 Youth Initiatives opened it doors as a youth work to the young people of Poleglass without a pre-packed strategy or methodology. The initial staff team had a wealth of experience in youth work and working together.

Over the past 23 years this staff team has grown in number and strength reaching out to young people not only in Poleglass but also Twinbrook, Lagmore and further a field. Much of the early youth work centred around the use of drama giving the young people the opportunity and confidence to perform on stage in front of large audiences of family, friends, funders and strangers and this enthusiasim for drama and the creative arts still exists within the Crosslinks Programme. West Belfast currently runs 6 youth work work programmes. Each programme reaches out to a specific group of young people, whether it is 11-14 year olds or 15-18 year olds, young men or young women, each programme is designed to meet the needs of that particular group of young people, with all programmes designed to compliment one another. The Youth Initiatives West Belfast Youth Work Centre is a hub activity open to young people 5 nights a week providing them with a safe and welcoming environment to grow and develop through their teen years.
